| 2010 Maine Bear Hunt
While at the 2010 Mid-Hudson Friends of NRA Annual Banquet, Dan W. of Annapolis, Maryland was the lucky bidder of a 6-day Fall Bear Hunt for two in Maine! From left to right: Gale K., Dick H., Thom W., Dan W. | The two hunts were graciously donated to the Mid-Hudson Friends of NRA by Maine Wild Country Guide Service. The package included two 7-day hunts over bait for Maine black bear and lodging at Merrill Brook Cabins. Dan was joined by his brother Thom and friends Gale and Dick. The four travelled north of Bangor Maine for their hunt. Upon arrival, the party was pleasantly greeted by their host Kathy York of Merrill Brook Cabins. The cabins can accomodate 7 hunters, so there was no problem for the 4 hunters. The cabin was nicely appointed with cable television, stove, microwave, pots, pans, dishes and a full size refriderator. |
Travelling to Maine for his first bear hunt, Dan picked the 4th and final week of the hunt over bait season with hopes of bagging a monster bruin. As luck had it, the party just missed a Boone & Crocket 498 lb black bear which was taken by another visitor to Maine Wild Country Guide Service just one day prior to their arrival!! The bachelors-for-a-week enjoyed morning coffee and camaraderie each day and then headed across the gravel road to the river for a bit of fishing. The hunting party enjoyed fishing for small mouth bass in the morning and early afternoon most days. They caught 5 large small mouth bass with the largest measuring in at a bit over 12 inches in length. They also caught northern pike and sunfish. All the fish were released back into the river for another day, but could have definitely provided the hungry hunters with a nice fish dinner! | |
| The weather was warm, in the low to mid 70s, warm for northern Maine the last week of September. On the last day of the hunt, Dick bagged a beautiful bruin weighing in around 265 lbs! A great example of a Maine black bear, weighing almost twice the average for a Maine black bear. Our guides, and hosts, John and Gary, were very knowledgeable, friendly, hardworking, considerate, and nonstop baiting the sites trying to bring in trophy bears for us. A first class operation all the way! We plan to visit them again next year! |
